The Welsh Government has pledged up to £22m of funding for the redevelopment of Theartr Clwyd in Mold, northeast Wales. The National reports that the popular cultural centre will be updated to serve the needs of visitors and creative professionals in the 21st century.

Theatr Clwyd was built in 1976 by Clwyd County Council, to serve as an arts centre for the people of Wales and beyond. However, the building now has end-of-life mechanics and electrics, and a leaking roof. The facilities are no longer fit for purpose, with poor disabled and pushchair access.

The new plans, developed by architects Haworth Tompkins, will create a sustainable theatre, with a greatly reduced carbon footprint. There will be a new health and wellbeing suite, with disabled facilities and a sensory garden. Much greater attention will be paid to the needs of families, with outdoor and indoor play areas, and an arts and crafts centre.

A new youth hub is to be created, where young people can relax and rehearse, and there will be a light filled central social space. All areas will have wider doors, working lifts, and accessible toilets, plus new technology to help people with sight and hearing loss enjoy the shows.

Deputy Minister for Arts and Sport, Dawn Bowden, said: “Theatr Clwyd has an international and national reputation for excellence and is a key part of Wales’ cultural infrastructure. Through its innovative services and partnerships Theatr Clwyd brings considerable social, cultural and economic benefits to Wales, particularly the local communities in NE Wales.”

Flintshire Council’s chief executive, Neal Cockerton, said: “This is a really welcome announcement by Welsh Government and will allow us and the Theatr to move forward with its exciting plans for refurbishment and development.”

The theatre currently attracts over 200,000 visitors per year. The work will be carried out in phases, and a 300-seat pop up theatre will be constructed next to the building, allowing it to remain fully operational throughout the redevelopment process.
